- What is an SSL certificate, and why would you want one?
The Secure Socket Layer protocol was created by Netscape to ensure secure transactions between web servers and browsers. The protocol uses a third party, a Certificate Authority (CA), to identify one or both ends of transactions.
The encryption uses a private key/public key pair to ensure the data can be encrypted by one key but can only be decrypted by the other key pair. The keys are similar in nature and can be used alternatively: what one key encrypts, the other key pair can decrypt.
SSL certificates are suggested (and in some instances, mandated by law) for web applications involving the transfer of ANY sensitive data, such as financial or personal information forms, sign in or log in forms, website content forms, etc. They help encrypt data transferred to and from your site and protect against session hijacking attacks.
